Project-based vouchers are a component of a public housing agencies (PHAs) housing choice voucher program. A PHA can attach up to 20 percent of its voucher assistance to specific housing units if the owner agrees to either rehabilitate or construct the units, or the owner agrees to set-aside a portion of the units in an existing development. -HUDThat's the official definition of Project Based Housing Vouchers anyway, straight from the HUD website. Here's how it works: Some apartment communities set aside either all or some of their apartments for low income people that qualify for specific reasons.
Sometimes it's because they or someone in the home is disabled. Sometimes a household qualifies for a specific project because there's a farm worker in the home. There are apartments with vouchers set aside for people coming out of drug rehab, and there are some that are simply set aside for low income families.
Generally, these apartments have long waiting lists, so seriously, even if you're not looking to move right now, start applying! In most cases the rent will be 30% of your adjusted gross income. Affordable rent really can make an amazing difference in the lives of low income families!
Today, I'm just making a list that's as readable as I can make it. Later as I begin to research, I'll try to narrow these communities down by qualifications. In the meantime.. here's my suggestion; Get on the phone, call each complex, and find out if you qualify. Then ask for an application to be mailed to you.
In most cases, you can fax back the application, which will save you plenty of time and money! Be sure to fill out every application 100% completely as some managers will simply mail it back to you if it's not finished as opposed to calling for missing information.
